Three years later upon his ninetieth birthday, Albert Hofmann received a stack of heart-wrenching letters from LSD prisoners directly or indirectly via John Beresford and answered them all personally. As the extracts from his letters to various women and men, mothers and fathers in prison in England, Ireland, and the USA show, Hofmann’s outrage over their arrest for possession or use of LSD is quite clear as is his deeply felt sympathy. To a mother in Dublin, he wrote: “My knowledge of the English language does not suffice to express my feelings and my admiration when I read the excellent enthusiastic description of the effects which your LSD experiences had on your life. I share your letter as one of the most beautiful documents testifying the mind opening power of LSD. ... I can only wish that you remain capable to retain your eyes and heart open for the reality of the wonder and beauty of life.”
